Saint Michaels Educational Complex consists of neighboring elementary and high schools which were combined into a single facility as part of a comprehensive renovation. The project created 178,000 square feet of space, divided into elementary, middle and high school units and providing space for Head Start, day care and community outreach facilities, with a 700 student capacity.
The project features an entirely new 500-seat community auditorium. The auditorium occupies the footprint vacated by the demolition of the high school cafeteria, which was moved adjacent to the elementary cafeteria to benefit from an expanded and consolidated central kitchen.
The project features an energy-efficient geothermal heat pump system. Fabric canopies at the entrances and special graphics at focal points are reminders of the nautical heritage of Saint Michaels. The schools were occupied during the entire renovation. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget at an approximate cost of $30 million.
